Our children’s bodies are so complex that it is unlikely that any one vitamin or mineral will eliminate ADHD. A building block approach typically works best, creating a strong foundation, which includes ensuring our children get the correct vitamins and minerals in the right dosage.
Magnesium is one of these minerals that is key to healing for anyone with ADHD symptoms. Our bodies use magnesium in combination with B6 and other minerals to detox from some of the 80,000 chemicals we might be exposed to that are on the market today. Magnesium is a natural supplement for ADHD and one of the most important minerals in our body, serving hundreds of different functions. In a European study that was comprised of 116 ADHD children, the results pointed out that 95% of these children suffered from magnesium deficiencies. Numerous other studies have showed these same findings, including deficiencies in zinc, B vitamins and Omega-3’s.
Magnesium is one of the easiest minerals to supplement. I imagine that most adults grew up with Epsom Salt in the house. When I was a kid, we used it to soak sprained ankles or sore muscles. Epsom Salt is Magnesium Sulfate and can be purchased in a drug store by the half gallon very inexpensively. No need to purchase the lavender scented, eucalyptus or spearmint varieties. Plain Epsom Salts works just fine.
Start with 2 cups in your child’s bath water at least 3 – 5 times a week. Too much magnesium in the body will result in diarrhea. If your child has diarrhea, cut the dosage to one cup per day or two cups every other day and monitor. Allow your child to soak or play in the bath for 20 – 40 minutes.
Note that there are many foods that bind magnesium and eliminate it from the body, so as you are adding magnesium into their diet, certain foods are at work eliminating it. For example, the phosphates in sodas bind magnesium making it unusable to the body. A diet high in sugar makes kidneys excrete more magnesium. Excessive saturated fats can also bind magnesium making it unusable to the body. Diet and magnesium become intertwined.
