When To Start Natural ADHD Interventions

I get lots of questions from parents about the right timing to start taking steps to eliminate their children’s ADHD symptoms. The answer is, the sooner the better, as long as we are talking about natural remedies and not medications. I have a couple of 8 week programs published in my book, “Healing Our ADHD Children”, that can be done simultaneously or back to back which address ADHD symptoms naturally.

I have found that the sooner these are undertaken, the better the outcome. Any child in elementary school or younger is a great candidate for eliminating ADHD symptoms naturally. Children this age want to please their parents and love positive rewards. They are not as attached to specific foods and new foods can be introduced more easily. If they feel like they are part of the process and they are excited about trying a new approach to make them feel better, typically they are “all in”. This is when working through an elimination diet gets easier. If they get to make choices like choosing between different snacks and they get to help prepare the foods, it is easier to enroll them in following the diet, than when they are older and more “set in their ways”!

Middle and high school kids typically won’t do well with natural remedies for a number of reasons. First, they are already likely to be on medications and have learned how to live with the side effects. Second, they are under lots of peer pressure to do what their friends do and to “fit in”, so the idea of going out with a group of friends to get pizza, when they can’t eat gluten, dairy or tomatoes, wouldn’t go over very well. I have found that occasionally a high school student who is still really struggling, might have the determination to go through the program, if they are fairly confident that it will help them eliminate their symptoms. The key to the sensitivity diet is that there is absolutely no cheating allowed, so if they go to a party and eat a handful of Skittles, they will have to start over. This is very hard for a child between the ages of 11 and 18 to do.

If you have a child who is 10 years old or younger, it is the perfect opportunity to get rid of the ADHD symptoms naturally. If they are already on medications, they can still go through the program and then work with their doctor to take them off their medications when the time is right.
